ALISON McMORLAND Alison was born in Renfrewshire into a musical family with south west Ayrshire and Irish roots. Having sung since early childhod she is a passionate promoter of traditional song and singing traditions and came to wider public notice in the 1970's through her recordings and publications. Her long involvement with the traditional arts has been on various levels; collector, performer, author, broadcaster and teacher. An early innovator of workshops and projects at folk festivals and in the community culminated in her co-founding a Community Arts Organisation which drew her away from performing for many years but which helped to contribute to the now established opportunities of traditional arts in the community. However songs and singing have been and remain at the very heart of what she is about. Under the inspirational guidance of Hamish Henderson, who said that "Alison stands out as one of the principal modern interpreters of an ancestral ballad singing tradition, breathing new life into ancient memorials by uniting scrupulous traditional fidelity with versatile and resourceful creative artistry" she learnt her craft from some of the great traditional singers no longer with us. Willie Scott and Lucy Stewart have been of particular influence leading her to publish on their respective lifestory and song repertoire.( the Stewarts of Fetterangus in preparation) Alison has been tutor of Scots song and singing on the well established Scottish Music Course at the RSAMD, Glasgow, since its inception, passing on the riches of the tradition to a younger generation of singers. Early, influential recordings include the children's classic album "The Funny Family" recorded when living in England with members of the Albion Band and John Tams as backing band; "My Song is My Own," Four Centuries of Womens' Songs, with Frankie Armstrong, Sandra Kerr and Kathy Henderson; a partnership with Peta Webb resulted in one of Melody Maker's albums of the year and a feature film in Phillip Donellans 'Pioneers of the Folk Revival'., as well as solo and contributing to other compilation albums.
